Is Bright, Victoria, a good place to visit?
Yes! Bright in Victoria’s High Country is one of the most popular places to holiday in Australia. Bright sits at the epicentre of the stunning Bright & Surrounds region. This includes Myrtleford, Mount Beauty, Dinner Plain, Tawonga, Harrietville, Porepunkah, Wandiligong, Gapsted, Dederang, and Ovens. While Bright is the main attraction, tourists are increasingly discovering the town of Myrtleford and its views of Mount Buffalo, its Italian heritage, historic kilns, antique shopping, wineries, and array of cafes and restaurants. Mount Beauty, named the Top Small Tourism Town for Victoria in 2025, sits by the Kiewa River at the foot of Falls Creek Ski Resort and is a quiet escape for adventure seekers, anglers, and families. And Dinner Plain, Australia’s cutest snow village, is popular for its winter snow, ease of access, free resort entry, and proximity to the ski slopes of Mount Hotham.

Bright & Surrounds offers beautiful, though different experiences across all four seasons. School holidays and public holidays are the busiest times, with mid-week deals and more competitive prices available outside these times.

As we enter October, the gardens awaken with cherry and ornamental pear blossoms, magnolia blooms, camellias and rhododendrons.
Is Autumn a good time to visit Bright, Victoria?
Yes! The autumn colours are truly magnificent in Bright and the surrounding areas like Harrietville, Wandiligong, Porepunkah, Myrtleford, Mount Beauty and Bogong Village. Bright is often voted as one of the best places in Australia to see autumn leaves. For this reason, autumn is one of the most popular times of year to visit Bright. The leaves start to change colour in late March, but are best observed at their colour peak around the last week of April and first week of May (although the peak time changes annually depending on the weather). The Bright Autumn Festival and the Wandi Nut Festival are held each year around the peak in the leaves changing colour.
Falls Creek vs Mount Hotham. Which ski resort is best?
Falls Creek and Hotham are both fantastic ski resorts that offer slightly different experiences. Both have a range of ski and snowboard slopes suited for beginners through to elites. Hotham has some of the steepest and most advanced double black runs in Australia and offers a larger range of advanced skiing compared with Falls Creek, which has a wider variety of intermediate trails. Hotham village is famous for being situated at the top of the ski slopes, providing it with the best views, whereas Falls Creek has a more intimate and family-friendly village centre. Falls Creek has the widest range of groomed cross-country ski trails, although Hotham and Dinner Plain also have a nice, though smaller, network. Other things worth noting: Hotham is home to Australia’s only biathlon range. It is located just 10km from Dinner Plain Alpine Village, which is a family-friendly alternative with a beginner ski slope and the Peashooter Toboggan Slope. Many feel the drive up to Falls Creek is easier and less intimidating than the approach to Mount Hotham via Harrietville, although the drive to Hotham from the Omeo side often has the least snow. If you would like to experience snow without going to a resort, Mount Buffalo National Park has two free natural toboggan slopes in winter that open when the snow is deep enough. There is also no resort entry fee to visit Dinner Plain.
Which is the closest ski resort to Bright?

Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Dinner Plain have a large selection of accommodation, although you can also visit on day trips from the valley. The town of Mount Beauty sits at the bottom of Falls Creek and is popular for ski-rental and off-mountain accommodation. It is only 30km from Mount Beauty to Falls Creek village. Similarly, the village of Harrietville is 30km from Hotham and is a great base for day trips up the mountain. Dinner Plain Alpine Village, which is a family-friendly option and more affordable for those not planning on skiing, is only 10km past Mount Hotham on the Great Alpine Road.
