It’s been 15 years since the first section of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail opened between Myrtleford and Bright, blazing the way for cycle tourism in Australia. Now part of a whopping 185km bike-path network that stretches from Wangaratta to Bright, Beechworth, Yackandandah, Milawa and Harrietville, the fully sealed trail remains one of Australia’s best bike paths. And it just got better!
Just in time for some glorious spring cycling, a series of stunning artworks have been unveiled along the path, which has also received a significant upgrade to the historic Eurobin Station precinct and a widening of the trail on a key section between Bright and Porepunkah.
The path’s new Colour Bridge at Porepunkah by art collective Skunk Control has been the talk of the town, hypnotising those who pass beneath its psychedelic floral canopy of red, orange, pink and blue.
Find it at the Roberts Creek Bridge on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail alongside back Porepunkah Road. It’s a 6km ride (one way) from the historic Bright Train Station to Porepunkah’s town centre.
Meanwhile, a collection of works by Barkindji artist Kent Morris at the historic Eurobin Station precinct gives us all pause for reflection. The captivating artworks centre around the bogong moth, a creature of huge cultural and environmental significance to the alpine region, and which has become critically endangered in recent years.
“The moth larvae develop along vast plains of the Darling River, the Barka, the ancestral and spiritual home of my people, Barkindji people, before making their journey to the Alpine region which creates a strong connection to the work and area for me,” says Morris, whose works invite people to reflect on what’s missing.
Find them at the historic Eurobin Station precinct off the Great Alpine Road. Eurobin
is an 8km ride from Porepunkah or an 11km ride from Myrtleford along the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail.
