Bike Rides and Beers around Mount Buffalo National Park
Fancy a pedal? What’s your choice – gentle rail trail trundling, heart beating mountain biking or challenging alpine road riding? Whatever your preference you’re in luck! If based in Bright or Porepunkah you’ll be close enough to jump on your bike of choice or hire one and get pedaling.
The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail links the two towns and makes for an ideal way to see this beautiful part of the world. The riding is easy and suitable to just about anyone and is 6kms one way – be sure to grab caffeine hit from the Rail Trail Café at Porepunkah. If mountain biking is more your thing then the Bright Mystic MTB Park is one of the best in the North East and home to three of the Dirty Dozen Trails.
For those who love to road ride, a trip to this part of the High Country wouldn’t be complete without at least one peak climb and why not tick off Mount Buffalo on your 7 Peaks Rides list.
With a ride option suited to everyone, you can all jump on a bike of your choice and raise the heart rate before lunch, making the most of the Alpine trails. Then replace the helmet with a sun hat, pack a picnic and hit the road to Mount Buffalo. Collect the road riders who’ve just ticked off their 7 Peaks Mount Buffalo ride and greet them with a picnic at the top. The picnic location choices are vast and it’s a perfect way to spend the hottest part of a Summer’s day, escaping the heat under the shady gum trees or even cooling off in Lake Catani.
If you still have some energy after your bike riding and are eager for a quick walk – head to the Chalwell Galleries if up for an adventure (albeit a short one), or perhaps the Gorge Heritage Walk if less adventurous. Watch the paragliders launch, the abseilers descend, the rock-climbers ascend and the view, oh the view from the Gorge Day Visitor Area! After an afternoon in the National Park, jump back in the car and head back to Bright for a crackin cold craft beer at the Bright Brewery where there is often live music, plenty of space for kids to run and a great pizza menu. You’ve had a big day so kick back and let the Alpine hospitality take you to into the evening. This will be a day to remember!
